SABRES ACQUIRE FOUR FROM SENATORS

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 27, 2016) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has acquired forwards Alex Guptill, Eric O’Dell and Cole Schneider, as well as defenseman Michael Sdao, from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forwards Jason Akeson and Phil Varone and defenseman Jerome Leduc.

Schneider (6’1”, 199 lbs., 8/26/1990) is a native of Williamsville, New York and was leading the Binghamton Senators (AHL) with 42 points (17+25) in 54 games this season. The forward has 191 points (83+108) in 263 career games for Binghamton.

O’Dell (6’0”, 195 lbs., 6/21/1990) was leading Binghamton with 18 goals and ranked second with 37 points (18+19) in 50 games this season. Guptill (6’3”, 190 lbs., 3/5/1992) has spent time in both the AHL and ECHL this season, posting a combined 24 points (14+10) in 41 games played, including one assist in three AHL games for Binghamton.

Sdao (6’4”, 229 lbs., 7/3/1989) had two assists and a plus-4 rating in 17 games for Binghamton this season. In 123 career AHL games, the defenseman has 18 points (9+9) and a plus-19 rating.

VARONE RECALLED BY SABRES

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 12, 2016) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forward Philip Varone from the Rochester Americans (AHL).

Varone (5’10”, 193 lbs., 12/4/1990) leads Rochester with 12 goals in 38 games played this season. The Vaughan, Ontario native led the Amerks in points in each of the last two seasons and is tied for the Amerks team lead with 26 points (12+14) this year.

Since his selection by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Varone has appeared in 41 career NHL games for the Sabres during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, totaling eight points (5+3) and 16 penalty minutes.

In a corresponding move, the team has placed forward Daniel Catenacci on injured reserve.

SABRES SEND THREE FORWARDS TO ROCHESTER

SABRES RECALL PHILIP VARONE

BUFFALO, N.Y. (January 16, 2016) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forward Philip Varone from the Rochester Americans (AHL).

Varone (5’10”, 193 lbs., 12/4/1990) leads all Rochester skaters with 10 goals in 33 AHL games this season. The Vaughan, Ontario native led the Amerks in points in each of the last two seasons and ranks third on the team through 38 games this season.

SABRES RE-SIGN VARONE TO TWO-WAY CONTRACT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 13, 2015) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed forward Philip Varone to a one-year, two-way contract.

Varone (5’10”, 185 lbs., 12/4/1990) appeared in a career-high 28 NHL games during three recalls with the Sabres in 2014-15, logging five points (3+2) and 10 penalty minutes. He spent the majority of the season with the Rochester Americans (AHL), where he posted team-leading totals in both points (44) and assists (29) for the third time in his four AHL seasons, earning a spot in the AHL All-Star Game.

In 37 career NHL games with the Sabres during the last two seasons, Varone has recorded seven points (4+3) and 14 penalty minutes. He has appeared in 262 regular-season games in four seasons with Rochester, totaling 192 points (55+137) and 164 penalty minutes.

Varone signed his first NHL contract with the Sabres in March 2012 after joining the Americans in 2011-12 on an AHL contract. Prior to joining the Americans as an undrafted free agent, the Vaughan, Ontario native spent five OHL seasons with Kitchener, London and Erie.
