BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 2, 2019) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has signed forward C.J. Smith to a two-year contract with an AAV of $700,000.
Smith (5’10”, 184 lbs., 12/1/1994) recorded 58 points (28+30) in 62 games for the Rochester Americans (AHL) in 2018-19, ranking second on the team in goals and points and third in assists. He also contributed four game-winning goals and led all Amerks skaters with a plus-26 rating.
Signed by Buffalo as a free agent in March 2017, Smith also scored his first two NHL goals during the 2018-19 season. The Des Moines, Iowa native has recorded three points (2+1) in 13 career NHL games and 102 points (45+57) in 119 career AHL contests. In his first full professional season in 2017-18, Smith was selected as the Amerks’ Rookie of the Year and earned MVP honors at the 2018 AHL All-Star Challenge

BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 23, 2019) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has assigned forward C.J. Smith to the Rochester Americans (AHL).
BUFFALO, N.Y. (February 4, 2019) — The Buffalo Sabres today announced the team has recalled forward C.J. Smith from the Rochester Americans (AHL).
In his second full professional season, Smith (5’11”, 181 lbs., 12/1/1994) is currently leading the Amerks in scoring with 41 points (18+23) in 41 games this season. This is Smith’s second recall of the season to Buffalo. Smith has appeared in four games with the Sabres this season, recording his first NHL goal on Jan. 8 against New Jersey.
In 2017-18, Smith tied for 10th among AHL rookies with 44 points (17+27) in 57 games and was named MVP of the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic. The Des Moines, Iowa native recorded one assist in two NHL contests in 2016-17 after the conclusion of his three-year collegiate career at UMass-Lowell, where he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2015 and garnered Hockey East All-Tournament honors in 2016 and 2017.
