- The NHL announced that Buffalo will host the 2016 NHL Draft. It will be the third NHL Draft ever held in Buffalo, joining the 1991 (Buffalo Memorial Auditorium) and 1998 (Marine Midland Arena) drafts.
- Sabres captain Brian Gionta was selected by New Jersey in the third round (82nd overall) of the 1998 draft in Buffalo.
