This is Buffalo’s third of seven preseason games after opening camp on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at First Niagara Center; it is their first of three home games during the 2013 preseason.
The Sabres will take the ice for their first home preseason game since Sept. 24, 2011. The team has won its last five home preseason games, with their last loss coming on Sept. 17, 2009, a 4-3 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals. In those five wins, the Sabres outscored their opponents, 21-9.
Buffalo and Carolina/Hartford have played nine preseason games all-time. The Sabres are 4-4-1 in preseason contests against the Hurricanes/Whalers; 2-1-0 at home, 1-1-1 in on the road and 1-2-0 at neutral sites. The Sabres opened the 2011 preseason exactly two years ago today with a 3-1 home victory over the Hurricanes, marking the last preseason meeting between the teams. The Sabres and Hurricanes will face off three times in 2013-14, including two January matchups at First Niagara Center.
Zemgus Girgensons leads the Sabres with three points (2+1) in two preseason games played. Marcus Foligno scored two goals at Columbus on Tuesday while leading all Sabres forwards with 20:41 of ice time. Goaltender Matt Hackett has logged 64:08 in relief between the two games, stopping 20 of 21 shots to earn two wins (.952 SV%, 0.94 GAA).
The Sabres are 140-147-49 all-time in the preseason. Buffalo is 27-11-3 in preseason action since the 2005-06 season; they finished the 2011 preseason 4-1-1, going 2-1-1 on the road and have started the 2013 preseason 2-0-0 after a 5-4 shootout win at Montreal on Sunday and a 3-1 victory at Columbus on Tuesday. These totals only include NHL games; the Sabres also defeated Adler Mannheim, 8-3, as part of the 2011 NHL Premiere Series in Germany.
Buffalo’s next game is Saturday (7 p.m.), as the Sabres host the Maple Leafs in their second home game of the preseason.
